New Superior General

Today we welcome onboard our new Superior General, the new Archbishop of Westminster, Richard Moth, as he is installed at a Mass at Westminster Cathedral, our Honorary President was present with the invited guests in the congregation.

As the Guild was established at Westminster Cathedral by Cardinal Bourne, the fourth Archbishop of Westminster, and per the constitution of the Guild, whoever holds the office of Archbishop of Westminster, also holds the office of Superior General of the Archconfraternity of St Stephen.

We offer him and Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the outgoing Archbishop and outgoing Superior General of the Guild, our prayers and continued support.

In reply to a letter from our Honorary President welcoming and congratulating him on his new appointment, Archbishop-Elect Moth noted his own serving background and membership of the Guild from an early age, looks forward to meeting us in due course and gives his assurance of his continued support for the Guild.

On reflecting his own vocational journey in recent days to publications ‘The Tablet’ and ‘The Catholic Herald’, a journey which has now led him to Westminster, +Moth recalls his early years in his home parish as an Altar Server, and the positive influence of his parish priest.

I wasn’t quite three when we came to England, so I don’t remember Zambia at all. The family settled in Kent, and as you do, I became an altar server in the little local parish, a small West Kent parish church. When I was about 12, I began to think – we had a very good parish priest, a lovely man: I wonder what it would be like to do what he does? That was the initial thought. It was not well thought out; I just said, at only 12, I wonder what it would be like to do what he does. The thought didn’t go away, and then I began to think about it, pray about it and pursue it more. So I went on retreat. When I was 17, I put in an application and was accepted.
